Finding Faith In A Harlot's House
The text quickly introduces someone we would not feel comfortable sitting in the church with. We are going to go into the house of a harlot. The harlot was a committed prostitute. Some may have called her a sidewalk hostess. She is not the typical character in the Bible, where people say they want to be like her. This is an example of an incomprehensible love of God. While we were yet sinners, God demonstrated love towards us.
In Joshua 6, we are reintroduced to Rahab. This woman, who has a past, was covered in the will. God’s love was designed to extend beyond the Jews. The word of God says that God so loved the world. The covenant cannot be broken. Christ is the one who initiated the covenant. The world is too quick to break its covenant. We must learn to love people as God has learned to loved us. God’s love is patient. It’s amazing how it took us twenty years to get delivered, but we want others to be delivered immediately.
When the men came to her house, she let them in the door, but they did not leave through the door. Rahab decides to hide them and hides them under the flax, which represents covering under the blood. When Rahab did this, she became a traitor to her own city. Rahab addressed the spies and said she knew what was going to happen to me. She requested for covering. It is not enough for you to just get saved. When you become truly saved, you want your family to be saved. Rahab has to believe that the God the Israelites served would honor their word and spare her life and her family. God is never in a hurry. What are three days? The Harlot lets the men out of the house through the window.
When the walls of Jericho came falling, there was one section that did not collapse. It was the wall with the rope. It was the area where God maintained his promise. God is going to keep His word. God is going to keep out of your path into your promise. If God said it, that settles it.
